Latest Battery Energy Storage News from around India

  1. Wind Solar Hybrid in Gujarat: The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) funded 300MW wind-solar hybrid power project with battery storage in Dwarka, Gujarat for which The grant has been awarded to India’s Shivman Wind Energy, which chose EverGreen Power as the contract partner.
  2. Secrecy in the Battery Industry ?  Scorpion Capital published a 188-slide report calling the QuantumScape Corp. a “scam.” Scorpion has a short position on QuantumScape, which means it’s betting on the company’s stock price to decline. QuantumScape is one among a growing crop of solid-state battery companies that are promising a leap in performance over current lithium-ion technology.
  3. Microgrid with Storage: The U-Solar’s micro-grid with storage project and diesel generator backup was developed for retailer Big Basket at its warehouse in Kataria, Gurugram, Haryana. The project is one of the first off-grid solar energy lithium-ion battery storage projects in the country.
  4. How prepared is India? “If there is not an adequate supply of domestic advance[d] batteries, India will simply go from being an oil-dependent country to a cell-dependent one,” wrote Aman Hans, Lead (Energy Storage Mission) with the NITI Aayog, in an article dated December 2020 on the government think tank’s website.
  5. Degradation crtieria of batteries: DNV tests four categories of abuse: average state-of-charge (SOC), SOC swing, cell charge and discharge rate (C-rate), and temperature. Those variables govern a battery’s degradation behavior and provide information about replacement intervals, and therefore replacement costs, in a project’s financial model.
  6. Dual Carbon Battery: Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) researchers have developed an alternative for lithium-ion batteries — a dual carbon battery.
  7. Azure Power: For Azure Power in India, Eos Energy is deploying a battery storage system to provide solar time-shifting. Eos said this builds on a similar previous deployment with another IPP in the country, where its tech was proven to work safely and well in a climate with temperatures as high as 45°C.
  8. Tender by Tangedco: The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd (TANGEDCO) has issued a tender, inviting bids from eligible bidders for the commissioning of a 1 MW (AC) solar PV power plant with an associated 1 MW/3.0 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the state of Tamil Nadu.
  9. Control of minerals: Today, China controls 72 per cent of the world’s solar modules, 69 per cent of lithium-ion batteries and 45 per cent of wind turbines.
  10. India’s first grid connected BESS: Nexcharge, a joint venture between Exide Industries and Switzerland-based Leclanche, on Tuesday inaugurated the country’s first grid-connected lithium-ion battery-based community energy storage system in Delhi in collaboration with Tata Power Delhi Distribution (TPDDL).

The latest opinion polls, including the Mood of the Nation survey by India Today, predict a comfortable victory for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP and its allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), with a projected win of 335 Lok Sabha seats in the 2024 general elections. This forecast suggests a slight decrease from the 2019 elections but still ensures a majority. The survey, involving interviews with over 149,000 respondents, reflects Modi’s enduring popularity based on his nationalist policies and economic reforms. Other polls echo these findings, although seat projections vary slightly. The opposition INDIA alliance is expected to secure a significant number of seats, yet not enough to challenge the NDA’s majority. These predictions highlight a political landscape that remains largely favorable to Modi and the BJP as the election approaches
