Latest Battery Energy Storage News from around the World:

  1. The researchers stated that Sandia’s new molten sodium-iodide battery operates at a much lower 230 degrees Fahrenheit than the commercially available molten sodium batteries, which typically operate at 520-660 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. China will encourage renewable power generators to add energy storage or peak-shaving facilities, aiming to boost renewable power consumption and to ensure stable operation of the grid system, the country’s state planner said
  3. $180 million battery with one hour of storage (it is expected to expand to four hours), the project will be the largest in the world with grid-forming capacity. The system, to be delivered by Wärtsilä, will operate initially in the usual grid-following mode, meaning the output synchronises to the grid’s voltage waveform. It will then be switched into the more novel grid-forming mode, making it capable of providing the grid with ‘virtual inertia.
  4. The global transition from internal combustion engines to electrified and battery electric vehicles is accelerating. The cost of batteries is more than 80% lower than it was just a decade ago, when they averaged $1,000 per kilowatt hour (kWh). Once that figure gets down to around $100/kWh, they will cost roughly the same as an internal combustion engine.
  5. The increased activity in the battery sector in India could be the Centre’s aim to set up large battery storage systems. In Ladakh region alone, the government is expected to float tenders to set up 13 GWh grid-scale battery storage systems. In addition to this, the Centre is also reportedly planning to set up 4 GWh of battery storage systems at regional load dispatch centres.
  6. The Manatee Energy Storage Center will have a 409-megawatt (MW) capacity with the ability to deliver 900 MWh of energy – enough to power 329,000 homes for more than two hours.
  7. China is expected to have more than 30 GW of cumulative storage installations by the end of 2025, and 100 GW finished by 2030.
  8. Vistra Corp., a Texas-based energy firm, and LG Energy Solution, a South Korean battery maker, have completed setting up the 400 MW/1.6 GWh Vistra Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility in Monterey County, California.
  9. In an application filed with the Public Utilities Commission of Texas, Tesla has requested to become a “retail electric provider” (REP) under its subsidiary Tesla Energy Ventures, reports Energy Choice Matters.
  10. A Japanese firm has set out to shake up energy storage and transmission with a freshly launched “power transfer vessel” concept that is designed to carry electricity from offshore wind farms to shore. The company’s first electric ship model, which will have an energy storage capacity of 200 MWh, is slated for completion in 2025.
  11. The estimated future market for thermal energy storage shows billions are on the table to support renewables. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) estimates a 2027 global market of $10.1 billion. In its November 2020 report, IRENA noted that the global market for TES could triple in size by 2030, with more than 800 GWh installed, up from 234 GWh of total capacity installed in 2019, mostly in solar tower and concentrated solar power molten salt installations.
  12. The business models that the energy industry maintained for decades are being rapidly altered. Romanian households must choose their power supplier, so CEZ Vanzare surprised customers by offering its electricity and gas packages in supermarkets and department stores. In Sweden, IKEA is complementing its solar panel business with green electricity for homes. Tesla intends to use its battery facilities in Texas to enter the retail power market.

Byju’s, once heralded as a flagship in India’s edtech sector, is grappling with severe financial and operational challenges, marked by a dramatic valuation drop. The company, which sought to stabilize its operations and finances, is now raising funds at a valuation significantly lower than its peak. This development comes amid efforts to address a substantial debt burden, with Byju’s proposing a repayment plan for its $1.2 billion loan. Investor confidence appears shaken, with some stakeholders pushing for drastic changes in leadership to navigate the crisis effectively. The turmoil reflects broader sectoral pressures and raises questions about the sustainability of high-growth trajectories in the edtech industry

Australia’s energy market is witnessing significant transitions and investments aimed at bolstering renewable energy infrastructure and securing gas supplies. Key developments include a $179 million investment by the Queensland Government for community battery projects, Santos’ $5.7 billion gas pipeline project following a legal battle win, and a $206 million energy savings package for NSW households. Additionally, the Australian government has secured new gas supply deals to support the east coast market, emphasizing the role of gas in transitioning to a renewable grid.

The latest opinion polls, including the Mood of the Nation survey by India Today, predict a comfortable victory for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP and its allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), with a projected win of 335 Lok Sabha seats in the 2024 general elections. This forecast suggests a slight decrease from the 2019 elections but still ensures a majority. The survey, involving interviews with over 149,000 respondents, reflects Modi’s enduring popularity based on his nationalist policies and economic reforms. Other polls echo these findings, although seat projections vary slightly. The opposition INDIA alliance is expected to secure a significant number of seats, yet not enough to challenge the NDA’s majority. These predictions highlight a political landscape that remains largely favorable to Modi and the BJP as the election approaches
