1. A joint platform of trade unions is scheduled to hold protests on Thursday against the National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP), a scheme introduced by the central government to raise as much as $81 billion by leasing out state-owned infrastructure assets over the next four years. According to the Union ministry of finance, the NMP will help fund new capital expenditure without putting pressure on government finances. HT
2. The Uttar Pradesh government has appointed a single-person commission to investigate the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case. Retired Allahabad high court judge Padeep Kumar Shrivastava will probe the incident and submit the report in two months. HT
3. At least nine people were killed and 27 others were said to be seriously injured after a truck and a passenger bus collided in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki. The bus was en route from Delhi to UP’s Bahraich when it collided head-on against the truck, leading to the death of nine passengers. As many as five people among the gravely injured have been shifted to a trauma centre in the state capital, Lucknow. HT

With Metro train projects already functional or in the pipeline in several cities across the country, at least 100 cities will have their own such networks by 2047 — the 100th year of independence — Durga Shanker Mishra, secretary, Union housing and urban affairs ministry, has said. India and the U.S. are on the same page on Afghanistan and the threat to the region from terrorism, said visiting American Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, calling the partnership “indispensable” for both countries and the world. Striking a discordant note on India’s impending delivery of the Russian S-400 missile systems, however, Ms. Sherman, who described the S-400 deal as “dangerous”, expressed the hope that the two sides could “solve” the issue that arises from the possibility of U.S. sanctions over the defence purchase.
